Australian University Worried Over Mobile Gambling

Sunday Mail - Australia

The Sunday Mail in Australia has reported that the Australian University of Technology is now worried over the impact of mobile casino game (sometimes termed 'm-gambling'), on it's local citizens.

According to Judy Drennan of Queensland University of Technology's Faculty of Business, mobile gaming has increased tremendously on an international basis and the effects are expected to be felt in Australia. Drennan is presently investigating the scale of m-gambling in that country Her research team is seeking volunteers to take part in their investigation of how many Australians are already m-gambling or are likely to take it up.

Australia's state and federal laws make it illegal for Australian companies to offer online casino gambling to Australians; however, it is not unlawful for Australians to access overseas internet gambling sites as it is to offer sports betting via the internet or mobiles.

Recently, the world's second largest gambling company, Intralot, has established a base in Australia and has applied for a lottery licence in the state of Victoria. This, among the growth of internet gamblers in Australia through mobile gaming has the local government and a local Committee, the Queensland's Responsible Gambling Committee quite worried about the impact it will have on their citizens, especially the youth. Coupled with internet pornography, it could prove a challenge for the government and local community to initiate and pass legislation forbidding internet gambling as the issue is very hard to legislate world wide.
